Assess every child
Use a short oral reading check so support starts at the child's current level, not only the grade level.
Education nonprofit in Ethiopia
BiftuSpark is a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity preparing a 12-month Reading Corps cycle: assess children individually, group by reading level, support local tutors, verify progress, and publish what changed.
The work
In many classrooms, children in the same grade can be at very different reading levels. Reading Corps starts with a short individual reading check, then places children in groups where the work matches what they can read today.
The first phase is planned for Assela, Oromia. Public gifts support tutor stipends, reading assessments, practice materials, local coordination, and reporting.
Reading Corps cycle
The model is built around practical steps donors can understand and local partners can check.
Use a short oral reading check so support starts at the child's current level, not only the grade level.
Fund structured daily reading practice, tutor coaching, and simple materials children can use consistently.
Share level movement, verification notes, spending updates, and lessons before deciding whether to expand.
Use of funds
Current public gifts support Reading Corps planning, local tutors, reading assessments, learning materials, school coordination, and public reporting.
