Gift policies

How gifts are handled.

Here are the rules we follow for donor records, receipts, restrictions, refunds, and conflicts.

Donor privacy

We keep donor records to process gifts, send receipts, answer questions, meet legal requirements, and share updates a donor asked to receive. We do not sell, rent, or trade donor lists.

Gift acceptance

We accept gifts that fit our charitable purpose: reading support and the practical costs needed to launch and report the work. We may decline a gift if it would pull the organization away from that purpose, create legal or ethical concerns, or cost more to manage than it helps.

Restricted gifts

If a donor wants a gift used for a specific budget line or purpose, the restriction should be in writing before the gift is accepted. If we later cannot use the gift that way, we will contact the donor when practical and discuss the closest responsible use.

Receipts and taxes

We are a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity. Donation platforms send receipts after a gift is made. Donors should keep those records and ask their own tax advisor about deductibility.

Refund review

Refund requests are reviewed case by case. The decision depends on platform rules, payment status, timing, and whether the funds have already been assigned or spent.

Conflicts of interest

Anyone with authority over BiftuSpark funds, vendors, partners, or program decisions is expected to disclose a conflict and step out of the decision when personal benefit could affect judgment. The full board and staff policy, covering annual disclosure, recusal, and record-keeping, is on the conflict of interest policy page.
